About the Author:

Cindy L. Stanfield earned a B.S. degree and a Ph.D. in physiology at the University of California at Davis. Her exposure to neurophysiology research as an undergraduate sparked her interest in pursuing a Ph.D. As a graduate student, she studied the role of neuropeptides in pain modulation and taught several physiology laboratory courses, which led to her interest in teaching. She currently teaches human physiology and neuroscience lecture courses and a lecture/discussion course in issues in biomedical sciences at the University of South Alabama. She recently retired from her research responsibilities to take on the duties of advising pre-health students. Cindy currently serves as the National President of Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), the national Prehealth Honor Society. She received the College of Allied Health Professions Excellence in Service Award in 2003, and the University of South Alabama Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Physiology Society, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions. She lives in Mobile, Alabama, with her husband, Jim, and their many cats and dogs.
